Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) This is high-quality German heavy-prog with pleasantly rough djent edges, while not lacking outstanding melodic content at the same time. Actually, not so much of a big surprise, since it's from the labs of music mastermind/magician Marek Arnold, who brought us "Cyril", "Seven Steps To The Green Door", and a couple of collaboration works with Manuel Schmid, too. He's, without doubt, one of the most creative and reliable songwriters in Germany to date. Favorite track: Poles Apart.

"Offensichtlich haben es sich TOXIC SMILE zum Ziel gesetzt, das erste Prog-Highlight des Jahres 2011 zu veröffentlichen. Und auch wenn die direkte Konkurrenz zum Release am 1. Januar noch nicht sonderlich groß sein dürfte, haben sich die Leipziger doch schwer dafür ins Zeug gelegt. Für ihr drittes Album hat sich die Band satte sechs Jahre Zeit gelassen, in denen allerdings auch eine DVD und eine EP erschienen sind. Genügend Zeit zum Reifen hatte das Songmaterial also, was man „I’m Your Saviour“ auch sofort anhört. Die neun Stücke sind gespickt mit eingängigen Hooklines, spannungsreich arrangiert und verzichten auf belanglose Füll-Passagen.

Die einzelnen Bandmitglieder verfügen über eine bestechend starke Spieltechnik, dabei liegt das Hauptaugenmerk aber eindeutig auf der Songdienlichkeit und nicht auf exzessivem Instrumental-Posing. Dem durchgängig hohen musikalischen Anspruch tut dies keinen Abbruch, nur wird die Komplexität völlig unaufdringlich in die Songs eingewoben und verkommt zu keiner Zeit zum bloßen Selbstzweck. Die musikalischen Paten sind Progressive-Größen wie SYMPHONY X, DREAM THEATER oder PAIN OF SALVATION, insbesondere in den ruhigeren Momenten (die sich hauptsächlich in der zweiten Hälfte des Albums tummeln) brauchen TOXIC SMILE auch den Vergleich mit der Prog-Supergruppe TRANSATLANTIC nicht zu scheuen...."

The revived Big Big Train shows that you can't keep a good band down for long with a fairly easy listening, non confrontational selection of songs both traditionally long and catchingly short. if at times the acoustic guitars and sharp keyboard breaks are reminiscent of early Genesis then this is fully intended and respectful to the likes of Messrs Rutherford, Banks and Phillips. Vocal harmonies are, as expected, a delight to the ear and the whole is a big step forward from Welcome To The Planet graeme wright
