"Tja, die Welt ist ungerecht. Während die Leipziger Prog-Metaller TOXIC

SMILE 2001 in Südkorea bereits fett abräumen, die Titelseiten der

dortigen Musikmagazine füllen und sogar bei MTV gefeatured werden, blieb ihr außergewöhnlich gutes Debüt "M.A.D." in heimischen Gefilden so gut wie unbeachtet. Wie war das noch gleich mit dem Prophet im eigenen Lande? Leider verweigert das zuständige Label BMG jetzt auch noch beharrlich die Freigabe der Rechte für eine weltweite Veröffentlichung. Fans und Band gucken einmal mehr in die Röhre.

Glücklicherweise haben sich TOXIC SMILE von diesen Rückschlägen nicht unterkriegen lassen und legen mit "Retrotox Forte" einen mehr als ebenbürtigen Nachfolger vor. Denn noch mehr als vor drei Jahren produzieren die fünf Musiker einen höchst eigenständigen Soundmix, der allzu offensichtliche Genre-Reminiszenzen vermeidet und mit so manchem Überraschungseffekt aufwartet. Egal, ob Gänsehautballaden (´Steps Back´), geile Intrumentals (´O.T.´ und ´Voix Du Passé´ mit Hammer-Chorsätzen) oder Mammut-Tracks (´Confidence In Deception´ mit direkt aufeinander folgenden "Sah ein Knab ein Röslein stehn..."- und Rap-Passagen!); alles klingt frisch und unverbraucht. Fans aller Prog-Spielarten sollten TOXIC SMILE deshalb mal ihre volle Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Es lohnt sich."

"Knapp 2,5 Jahre ist her, da füllten Toxic Smile mit Acts wie Sepultura und Slayer in Südkorea Stadien, standen mit BMG bei einem Major Label unter Vertrag und konnten mit ihrem Album MAD in die koreanischen Charts einziehen. Doch der Traum vom internationalen Durchbruch erwies sich leider als Seifenblase. BMG plante nur für den asiatischen Markt, an einem europäischen Vertrieb zeigten sie keinerlei Interesse. Streitigkeiten folgten und so wurde der Vertrag schließlich aufgelöst. Doch nun ist die sächsische Prog-Kapelle wieder zurück und beweist mit Retrotox Forte, dass sie gestärkt aus ihrem asiatischen Abenteuer zurückgekehrt ist.

Die knapp 70minütige CD überzeugt auf der ganzen Linie, denn Toxic Smile verstehen es, stilistische Vielfalt und Homogenität miteinander zu verknüpfen. Obwohl die musikalische Palette von Progmetal über klassischen Prog und Balladen bis hin zu Jazzelementen reicht, wirkt die Scheibe wie aus einem Guss. Hinzu kommt ein ungemein transparenter, dynamischer Sound. Die Gastmusiker Norbert Jäger (Stern Combo Meißen) und die Condé Singers (Ex-Kreuzchormitgleider) tragen zur hohen Qualität des Albums bei. Bei aller Komplexität, verschachtelten Songstrukturen und Breaks beweisen die Leipziger ein Händchen für eingängige Melodien. So beweisen die beiden gefühlvollen, eindringlichen Balladen Sacrificial Flame und Steps Back im positiven Sinne Radiotauglichkeit. Heimlicher Höhepunkt der CD ist jedoch das 12minütige Confidence In Dececption, ein Stück, das durchaus den Vergleich zu alten Spock's Beard Stücken standhalten kann. Allein schon das Piano-Intro erzeugt bei mir eine wohlige Gänsehaut. Gegen Ende wird dann noch experimentierfreudig mit den Hörgewohnten des Hörers gespielt und deutsches Liedgut sowie Rapelemente in den Song eingebaut.

Fazit: Mit Retrotox Forte beweisen Toxic Smile, dass sie zur Speerspitze der deutschen Progszene gehören. Meine Empfehlung!"

Good modern prog albums are a rare beast in my eyes so this was a nice discovery. This album is very layered yet crisp sounding. Not exactly heavy but delightfully dense. Among other things the vocals are not someone's Dad doing their worst Roger Waters impression but are actually, quite good and give the music its own identity. I especially like the performance on Suli's rise. The songs flow really well and there's a lot of extremely ambitious playing. Also bonus points for church organ. impressivelad
